Argentine Shortfin Squid · 阿根廷魷魚

A migratory cephalopod of the SW Atlantic, Illex argentinus sustains one of the world's largest squid fisheries by volume. Baixian Trade's primary operations are with Taiwan origin jiggers licensed inside the Falklands EEZ (FICZ/FOCZ), complemented by active sourcing from mainland China origin jiggers operating in adjacent high seas outside the Falklands and Argentine EEZs. Seafrozen catch is delivered direct from the fleet; further processing into landfrozen semi-finished products runs through our two facilities — BXTW-FAC-1 in Kaohsiung and BXGC-FAC-3 in Fuzhou.

Distribution

Migratory cephalopod found across the SW Atlantic continental shelf and slope, from the Río de la Plata estuary (≈35°S) to the southern Patagonian shelf (≈54°S). Three principal stocks recognised: Bonaerensis-North Patagonian (BNS), South Patagonian (SPS), and the smaller Summer Spawning (SSS) cohort. Baixian Trade's primary catch comes from Taiwan origin jiggers licensed inside the Falkland Islands EEZ (FICZ + FOCZ), with active sourcing from mainland China origin jiggers operating in adjacent high seas around 45°S. Argentine-EEZ raw material — sourced through Argentine fleet partnerships — feeds landfrozen processing at our Fuzhou facility.

Stock & management

Stock assessed under Argentine SAGyP / INIDEP authority within the Argentine EEZ; managed by the Falkland Islands Government within the FICZ/FOCZ; and by flag-state authority in adjacent international waters.

The Falkland Islands Illex season runs Feb 15 – Jun 15, with a closed period through austral winter (July onwards). Argentine-EEZ operations follow a phased opening from January, also closing mid-year. 2025 assessment characterises the stock as fluctuating but commercially viable. Vessel quota governed by FICZ/FOCZ licensing for Taiwan origin operations; high-seas activity subject to flag-state vessel reporting under SPRFMO framework.

Supply chains

Two seafrozen origins. Two landfrozen facilities.

Illex argentinus reaches our buyers through two seafrozen catch origins — divided by fleet flag and operating zone — and two landfrozen processing facilities — divided by plant location and product range. The fleet that catches it, where it's caught, and where it's processed all change the product specification. We surface the difference at the line-item level rather than treating Illex as a single SKU. All landfrozen products at both facilities are available EU-treated or non-treated at the buyer's choice, reflected in the unit price.

FAO 41 Falkland Islands EEZ (FICZ + FOCZ) — Falklands-licensed

Taiwan origin contract jiggers operating inside the Falkland Islands EEZ under FICZ/FOCZ licensing — the senior catch programme for our Illex operations by both volume and structural commitment. Catch is seafrozen at vessel as Whole Round, Seafrozen Dirty Tube ("Vaina"), and Seafrozen Tentacles. Seafrozen product can be delivered direct from the fleet for buyers who specify SF-only, or routed onward to BXTW-FAC-1 (Kaohsiung Qianzhen) for landfrozen value-added processing.

Operationally this is our most established Illex programme. The 100/180g through 400/600g grade range serves a broad set of buyers globally — across Asian retail and HMR channels, Iberian and Mediterranean foodservice, and Latin American distribution. European markets specifically prioritise 300/400g and larger sizes for foodservice and retail, with EU plant approval references referenced consistently. BNS cohort dominates in mid-to-late season; SSS and SPS cohorts appear at season start and end respectively (see Stock characteristics below).

Mainland China origin contract jiggers operating in international waters around 45°S — outside both the Falklands and Argentine EEZs — under flag-state vessel reporting. Catch is seafrozen at vessel in Whole Round only; sized for direct sale or for onward landfrozen processing at our Fuzhou facility. The cohort composition shifts through the season — adjacent waters yield more SSS in early season, transitioning to BNS through mid-season as the spawning aggregation moves south.

The Mainland China origin programme is structurally complementary to the Taiwan origin Falklands operation: same SW Atlantic stock, different waters, different licensing regime, different shore network. Together the two seafrozen origins give us coverage across the full FICZ/FOCZ + high-seas footprint of the SW Atlantic Illex fishery.

SW Atlantic Illex argentinus raw material — drawn primarily from the Taiwan origin Falklands operation — landed at BXTW-FAC-1 (Kaohsiung Qianzhen) for landfrozen value-added processing. The plant produces a structured line: Cleaned Tube (Tip-ON and Tip-OFF), Rings (Skin-OFF), Squid Carved, and a Tentacles range covering three head/neck/beak configurations.

All BXTW landfrozen products are available EU-treated or non-treated at the buyer's choice — the choice is reflected in the unit price and routes the consignment through the appropriate post-processing line. Stock physical characteristics

Same grade, different stock.

At the same nominal size grade — say, 200/300g — product from different stocks can be visually distinct. Mantle proportion, fattness-to-length ratio, and size-at-maturity all vary. Procurement teams sourcing across origins benefit from understanding which stock predominates in which fleet's catch through the season.
